Learning to Play Golf — A Lesson in Intention, Patience & Progress
Not long ago, I made a decision. I wanted to play a round of social golf with my dad on my next visit to Kota Kinabalu, where my family live. So…I set myself a goal six months prior: be ready for a game with Dad by October 2025.
I’m not a golfer. But I’d been working on my range game with my partner’s guidance. Once I made this choice, I knew I had to start prepping.
Starting From Scratch
I initially had two professional lessons with Dave Saunders at Pittwater Golf Centre. He helped me understand the basics without overcomplicating things. A great place to build a foundation for me. He understood how new I was.
Around 9 months later, I decided to join two beginner’s group workshops with Lisa Deep at Pittwater Golf Centre - one focused on the short game, one on the long game. Lisa’s teaching style really helped me at the time. I had started to believe that I wouldn’t be able to play a full game. She broke everything down in a simple, clear, and encouraging way. She helped me realise that yes, this was possible. I could play.
And once I believed that, things started to shift more.
Making Time for the Goal
It wasn’t just about showing up once or twice. I had to create space in my weekly routine. This has meant blocking out regular time and staying consistent.
I also made sure I had someone to keep me accountable - my partner. Of course, there’s also me - but like you, I also love an #accountabilitybuddy - I’ve tracked my progress, noticed my mindset, and kept my goal front and centre. And yes, I’m still working on my goal! We had to postpone our October 2025 game due to a tropical thunderstorm! But a new date has been set for December 2026!
What About You?
Let me ask:
What’s something you want to do this year?
What’s your first step?
Could you use some support or structure to help you follow through?
Sometimes we put things off because they feel too big. But everything changes once we decide and take the first small step!
