My Thoughts On: A World Without Complaints by Will Bowen

How often do you catch yourself complaining?

It might be about the weather, the traffic, your workload, or even something as small as your coffee order not being quite right. For many of us, complaining has become second nature — a habitual way to connect, vent, or fill silence. I didn’t realise just how often I complained until I read A Complaint Free World by Will Bowen.

This book shook me.

When I read it for the first time, it was like someone had held up a mirror. I became painfully aware of how frequently I complained — sometimes without even realising it. Not just out loud, but in my thoughts too. Complaining had crept into my daily language, and even more, my mindset.

The book presents a challenge: Go 21 consecutive days without complaining, criticising, or gossiping. Sounds simple, right? It’s not.

To help with this, Bowen suggests a tool — a rubber band or bracelet. You wear it on one wrist and each time you catch yourself complaining, you switch it to the other wrist and start your 21 days again. The goal isn’t to be perfect — it’s to become aware. And that’s exactly what happened for me.

I tried the rubber band trick.

At first, I was switching wrists constantly. I’d barely get through the morning before needing to swap sides. But over time, something shifted. I started noticing the impulse to complain before the words came out. I learned to pause. To reframe. To either say nothing — or to say something constructive instead.

This small act of awareness created a huge ripple effect.

I became more intentional with my words, more grateful for what was working, and less focused on what wasn’t. I noticed conversations became lighter, solutions came faster, and I felt… calmer.

Here’s the truth:
We often complain out of habit. It’s a default setting — one we’ve probably absorbed from the world around us. But habits can be changed. And if you want to feel more empowered, positive, and in control of your life, reducing how much you complain is a powerful place to start.

Questions to reflect on:

  • Do you complain more than you realise?

  • Is it just a habit… or is it holding you back?

  • What would change if you shifted from complaining to problem-solving — or even just letting go?

If you're curious (or brave), I challenge you to try it.

Grab a rubber band or bracelet and commit to 21 days complaint-free. It might take you weeks — even months — to get there. But the awareness you'll gain along the way is worth every wrist-swap.
